Sports Training for Kids - Live Vs Online Vs DVD

Considering getting sports training for your child? This article will give you some food for thought when considering live training versus online or DVD based training.

Tech Evolution

Technology has made it easier to gain access to quality trainers through websites and DVDs. The number of offerings is staggering, and the credentials of the trainers are impressive.

In the early days there was only Video or DVD training available and many of the offerings were one size fits all. But today there are training websites for virtually every sport and covering a large range of ages and skill sets.

While there are a few free online training sites most are membership based with process ranging from $5 - $30 per month. The price differences are usually based on how customized the training program is for the individual.

DVDs usually range in price from $20 - $60 depending on the depth of instruction and the notoriety of the trainer. Big time college or Pro coaches generally cost more than institution or organization issued titles.

Almost every sport has at least one recognized organizational body that regulates rules and standards for the sport. These organizations usually produce "how-to-play" media to help new player learn the sport. These offerings are not usually as in-depth as the private media producers', but they are a good place to start for younger players.

Is Live Training Better?

The argument for live training, especially for younger players is that without being physically present while the player is performing the drills associated with sports training, the trainer cannot identify and correct errors being made that are unique to the individual player.

Every player is different, and while skill sets needed to play any sport are the same, every player will incorporate a different interpretation of those skill sets base on their unique physiology.

A good trainer will be able to help a player improve in a way best suited for them, but it will come at a higher cost than online or DVD based training.

Live Training Can Be Expensive

Live training prices can range from $25 dollars a session to $125 an hour, depending on the number of participants and the level of the training.

To keep costs down try to take group lessons, and see if the trainer offers discounts for multiple sessions, or offers training package discounts.

Some trainers offer one free training session so that you can evaluate whether or not they are a good fit for your child. Try to visit at least 2-3 trainers before making a decision.
